Amazing Photo Gallery Brings Rape Into Focus! Thank You, Yana Mazurkevich Photography
Sometimes an organic grassroots movement begins without a catalyst. It seems everyone reaches the same conclusion over a short period of time and the conversations begin. Maybe it’s universal fatigue, or perhaps it’s a social phenomenon that pulls something out of the ether-sphere and effects the minds of the populace.
Whatever the case, when I began to write FBoM, Brock Turner wasn’t on the radar; Bill Cosby was just a comedian and people were uncomfortable discussing the nature and long term emotional damage done to the victims of rape in its many forms.
It’s easy for all of us to be appalled and sympathetic when a woman is violently raped in some horrific way, we are all human and most of us have a certain amount of empathy towards those that have been violated. We tend to lose our outrage quickly however, when it’s some teenage girl that got drugged, or a wife that got raped by her husband. We read the news and are sad for a moment and move on when the next big story comes across the radar, leaving the women to grieve on their own and try to rebuild their lives. To learn how to trust again.
Our legal system does more to protect the attacker than the victim. We make the women relive the event over and over and then question how much of it was her fault. Why did she drink? Why did she wear that outfit? Why did she allow herself to be in that situation to begin with. Didn’t she really want it and then feel guilty the next morning?
The dirty secret, that is hard to admit, is that, emotionally and psychologically ,violent rape and date-rape aren’t all that much different. Yes there is the extra component of violence and fear, recovery from injuries in the violent cases, but the violation, trust issues, “was it my fault?” doubts, and so much more are all very similar.
A wonderful photographer, and new friend, has been getting quite a bit of attention for a piece of work she put together after the Brock Turner incident. Yana Mazurkevich managed to catch in images the words that have been written in FBoM. Once again the universe is speaking… as I so frequently say when I advertise FBoM… “Let the dialogue begin” …
